MCV stands for Mean Corpuscular Volume. It is a measurement used in hematology to evaluate the average size and volume of red blood cells in the body.
What is MCV?
MCV measures the average volume occupied by a single red blood cell. It is expressed in femtoliters (fl). The normal range for MCV in adults is 80-100 fl.
MCV is an important parameter in a complete blood count (CBC) test. A CBC test measures different components of blood, including red blood cells, white blood cells, hemoglobin, and platelets.
Why Measure MCV?
Measuring MCV allows diagnosis of certain blood disorders. If the MCV is higher or lower than the normal range, it indicates the red blood cells are larger or smaller than normal. This can help identify different types of anemia:
High MCV (macrocytic): Seen in vitamin B12 or folate deficiency anemias
Low MCV (microcytic): Seen in iron deficiency anemia or thalassemias

High vs Low MCV:
A high MCV indicates macrocytic or megaloblastic anemias where the red blood cells are oversized. This is seen in:

A low MCV indicates microcytic or small red blood cells. This is characteristic of:
